As a self-proclaimed house lover, I find myself pouring over new homes for sale in the area and floor plans. I am always dreaming of what my perfect house will be in the hopes that we build one … way off in the future. But a girl can dream, right?

Although sometimes I have to cut back on the dreaming so that I don’t become discontent with my own home, which I love and am very grateful for.

One element of a new home that I always find myself drawn to is the large kitchen island. I know I’m not alone in that want, because I see it in almost all new homes. It’s very trendy right now, and I hope it stays in trend for a long time. But I just love the idea of cooking a meal while my family sits at the island and talks or my girls work on their homework or some other project.

I know that at my parent’s home, they have a peninsula with barstools that acts just like an island. My girls are all the time playing with play dough up there while my mom and I cook and it’s just so fun! Well, until they climb across the counter and try to help, or get play dough in the food. Ha!

So, settle in for a little inspiration of colorful kitchen island ideas. I know that I would definitely want mine a different color than the cabinets.

Do you love kitchen islands? What color would your island be?

  1. I’m looking to paint my island an olive green. My other cabinets are cream & a gloss finish which I love because it’s easy to wipe clean. What finish should I use for the green? The gloss doesn’t seem to work in my mind.

  2. I always thought maybe the dark stained island was for me, or more recently a black. But that midnight blue is striking!

    1. Isn’t it just gorgeous!? I love it, too! (And thanks for having my back, girl! I appreciate it! 🙂 ) xo, Laura

  3. I hope after a few more years of housecleaning you change your mind about these ideas. Who’s going to keep that chandelier dust-free? If you are going to dream big, I hope you can afford the cleaning crew to go along with it. And good luck finding some people to do a quality job!! Are you going to provide some good accident insurance and sturdy ladders? I hate to poke holes in your dreams but I wouldn’t want to spend my whole life trying to keep up with those lights hanging over my food prep area. I think you should be very content with what you have. I’m speaking from a lifetime of experience and when you get older you may have to sell your dream home because it’s too big to keep up. Think about that now while you still have your health and energy. I used to be a type A personality and had a sudden health crisis. Suddenly I stopped dreaming big and started thinking practical. Besides, most of these designers and architects are selling dreams for the money they can reap and magazines they can sell. Sorry this is so long…just trying to encourage you to change directions. Dreams aren’t bad but perhaps you’re dreaming too materially and I know you’re much “bigger” than that. email me personally and we can continue this conversation if you’d like.

    1. Hi Pam,

This post is merely supposed to inspire others to think of ways they can add color to their homes, not to have unattainable dreams where people are financially in over their heads. Obviously if someone is thinking of purchasing a home, they should consider the cleaning costs and maintenance that goes with it. You’re right, though, it’s important to remember to be content with what we have and grateful for the gift of a home. Practically thinking is key, too. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! Blessings, Laura

  4. I am just beginning a bath and kitchen redo, I have a free standing island, distressed white, with wooden top.. I am painting the island Smoky Mountain, Benjamin Moore, and dark staining the wooden top. I am happy to see the second photo (source unknown) and get an idea of my finished project.

  5. Love this post….We built our home 30 yrs. ago and I wanted an island…I took a little convincing of my hubby but everyone comments how great it is…..5′ x 6’….we just used kitchen cabinets to make a 4′ x5′ box so we have 1 ‘ on outer 2 sides for stools….5-6 stools can fit. I just painted my oak cabinets (hey. it was the 80’s)…..kitchen cabinets (and all other molding in the house) a white and the island somewhere b/t the teal and cornflower color….love it….now I just need to figure out the countertops….
