The “Go Big or Go Home” Rule of Decorating

Over the years of decorating my own space, making many mistakes, and learning from them, I have learned the rule of “go big or go home.”

I used to walk into a store and buy all of the small little tchotchkes because they were cheap. I could get a little boost of happy and add it to my decor stash. Yay!

But, what did that mean for my home? It meant that I had a mantel full of small knick-knacks. Or a wall with tiny little frames on the wall. Let me show you an example:

Old master bedroom has tiny little frames on the wall. It needs something much bigger!

Oh my! The scale is so off. Instead of investing in a large piece of art, I chose small frames all spread out because they were inexpensive.

Thankfully, I eventually realized the frames were not the right thing for this large wall above the bed. I made a large headboard and added a big piece of art above the bed for a better filler of the space!

Since those early days of decorating my home, I’ve learned a lesson or two about proportion and scale. And, yes, size does matter.

Having a large statement piece will make the most impact and look the best when decorating your home. That’s the rule of “Go big or go home!” Simple, right?

I will also say that large wall decor doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, it can be super inexpensive, like my large abstract art that I made myself. Check it out here. So, check out these amazing ideas from some amazing women and get to decorating!!

    1. Hi Suzanne, these were both from the Hearth and Hand line at Target a few years back. They don’t sell them anymore, but if you search for them on a second hand store like Mercari or Poshmark, I bet you could find them! Or look for similar signs at Kirklands or Hobby Lobby. Hope this helps! – Laura

  1. WOW, simply amazing! One of the best truly budget friendly decorating ideas I’ve ever come across! The only problem is I loved everything & want them all 😊. Thank you for giving hope to very old lady on very tight budget! So appreciated.

  2. Hi Laura,

I have zero wall space, but I can always add “wallpaper.” I loved this post! Some really fun ideas. Thanks! Merry Christmas!

    1. I do love the open feel you get but the downside in the lack of walls is the place to hang/display things you love. You can float a sofa with a table behind it – but it is difficult to float a picture.

      1. Ooh . To float a picture you could hang from ceiling with fishing line, ribbon, or a pretty chain. I would say directly above the table you floated behind the sofa,as mentioned above. The truck would be to have the picture be double sided like your Christmas sign. Enjoyable from both sides.😊
