The Best DIY Halloween Decorations

|

Gone are the days when Halloween decorations consist solely of plastic orange pumpkins and plastic trash bags slung in trees. These DIY Halloween home decor ideas will add just the right touch of spooky, fashionable fun to your home this season.

I love the fall, but I have to admit that while I love the color orange (I’m a Tennessee grad), I don’t love it in my decor. I tend to lean more towards soft greens, blues—and, of course, turquoise shades.

DIY Halloween Decoration Ideas

In years past, my distaste for orange made finding fall and Halloween decorations a bit harder. Thankfully, these days there are so many amazing options that can effortlessly layer into a well-styled home. Whether you buy them or try your hand at some DIY Halloween decorations, these are my favorite picks for adding some {slightly} spooky decor this year.

I love sharing my favorite fall decorating tips with you! I’ve shown you how to create a fall mantel and how to make your own fall wreaths, as well as beautiful fall centerpieces to decorate your home! I hope they all inspire you to create a home you love!

Ideas for Halloween DIY Decor

Need proof that Halloween decorations can look totally on-trend and inconspicuous in your home? Here it is! These simple ideas are the perfect way to get Halloween home decor added without having to DIY a ghost from a trash bag. 😜

Get Creative with Plain Glass Bottles

Halloween Apothecary Station with plain glass bottles and free printables!

Take everyday, ordinary glass bottles, some free printables and a little creativity and you’ll be able to make this spooky apothecary set-up from Lauren at Blesser House.

Use plain glass jars to make spooky apothecary jars in your Halloween decor.

This Harry Potter-themed potion display from Sweet Rose and Wren shows just how much fun glass bottles can be! Each is labeled with purchases from Etsy that were printed on sticker paper and applied, turning an ordinary glass bottle into something magical.

Speaking of, each bottle is filled with seemingly magical potions — just don’t tell the kids it’s plain food coloring in water.

Add Googly Eyes to Everything

Add google eyes to your current fall decor to make to seem appropriate for Halloween!

I LOL’d when I saw these Halloween props. A simple, yet fun idea is to apply adhesive googly eyes to everything. This is one of the easiest Halloween home decor ideas I’ve seen, but it adds just the right amount of spooky (or silly!) to your home. As you can see, they make quite the impact for such an inexpensive supply from your crafts store!

Go Classic with Black & White

Classic black and white touches make this Halloween mantel decor super affordable and easy to achieve!

A classic black and white Halloween mantel is easy to achieve with items you probably already have on hand! Jamie at So Much Better With Age is a fabulous resource for up cycling items already in your home. She’s a treasure trove of DIY Halloween decor ideas!

Hang Harry Potter-esque Floating Candles

These floating lights are so popular these days! And while buying them isn’t DIY them, you can probably figure out how to DIY them pretty easily! You can make them look classy or spooky depending what props you pair them with!

Add a Trail of Spiders

Use a simple trail of spiders to add some spooky decor to anywhere!

Here’s another brilliant, inexpensive, and creepy way to add Halloween decorations: plastic spiders. Delia Creates attached her plastic spiders to magnets and added them to a metal door, but a small command strip could work as well. Add some spider webs for an even more creepy effect.

DIY Halloween Decorations

Feeling crafty? These Halloween decorations are simple enough for even a beginning crafter to make. These would also be great projects to make with kids. First up, some adorable outdoor Halloween decorations:

DIY Crow Wreath

Where better to start inserting some creepy details than the front door? This brilliant crow wreath project from A Pumpkin and A Princess will send a chill down anyone’s back—particularly if they have ever seen Hitchcock’s The Birds. Plus, it only requires a few supplies to create like a grapevine wreath and faux crow.

DIY Halloween Doormat

How cute is this?! Another fun way to get your front door ready for Halloween fun is to create a DIY Halloween doormat like this one from House on Longwood Lane. The tutorial makes this one seem very do-able and it’s a budget-friendly project as well. (Want other ideas for fall-related doormats? I’ve gathered some of my favorites here.)

DIY Black Marbled Vases

DIY Black Marbled Vases are the perfect understated, not scary Halloween decor!

I love that these DIY black marbled vases are not only such an easy DIY project, but also have an understated Halloween vibe. Nothing scary to see here, children. Lauren at Blesser House took some plain old jars and turned them into something beautiful – all with items you probably have at your house!

This would be a cute technique to use on old mason jars and then use them as vases for a creepy, floral tablescape!

DIY Creepy Halloween Book

If you have an old dictionary that needs recycling, this is the perfect Halloween decorating project to make. Run to Radiance did just that by adding plastic fangs (tinged with blood, of course), fur and googly eyes.

DIY Skull Candleholders

You won’t believe how simple this brilliant DIY skull candlestick craft from Rain on a Tin Roof is! She uses Dollar Store skulls (similar to these ones) and sheer ingenuity to create DIY Halloween decor that is easy to layer into a bookshelf, dining table, or side table.

DIY Flying Bat Decor

Paper bats make beautiful decor for Halloween!

An inexpensive, yet high-impact way to decorate is to create a flying bat display, like this one from Crazy Wonderful. You can purchase pre-made paper bats here, or simply cut your own out using black construction paper.

Make sure to give them a good fold down the center so they look dimensional. They also look the best when grouped together and heading on a “flight path”.

DIY Pumpkin Candy Holder

This project requires a little more power tool skills and parts of it might be less of a project for kids. But I promise the kids will enjoy the end result!

This adorable DIY Lighted Pumpkin Candy Holder is simple to make with just 2 supplies and a few regular household tools! Perfect for leaving behind while you take your kids trick-or-treating!!

This super festive candy bowl lets trick or treaters know that can have a treat even if you’re not home! We like to set this out while we walk around the neighborhood with our girls and can’t be there to answer the door. It even glows in the dark, thanks to a light in the back, so that kids can see it in the dark!

  1. I LOVE/HATE the spiders and bats! But totally doable for the front door. I can get everything I will need at the Dollar Tree. Thanks for sharing. Have a BLESSED weekend!

    1. Yes!! The dollar tree is a great idea! And I’m equal parts terrified of this kind of decor and think it’s kind of fun. Haha!!! I may try to do something this year if I have the time! Thanks for reading! xo, Laura
