This neutral farmhouse eat-in kitchen makeover design is full of texture and function. And it makes the perfect backdrop for any seasonal decorating or pops of colors you may love!
I’m so proud of myself for starting one one of my home goals for this year already. But I blame it on my power sheets. 😜 They are doing an awesome job of keeping me on track with what I want to accomplish this year. I’m also using a new design tool that helps with planning a makeover or project. I’ll be sharing about it soon, so stay tuned!
You can see all of my 2018 home goals right here. I really thought I would start with the fireplace makeover, but two of the components of my eat-in kitchen makeover were on sale recently, so I decided to go for it! (You can always follow along on Instagram for behind the scenes peeks at the progress!)
I really haven’t tackled too many cosmetic makeovers in the house recently, so this will be a nice change this year as I focus on new decor and updating some rooms that haven’t been changed in 5 years.
If you have been around for a while, then you’ll remember how the eat-in kitchen has looked for the past forever. I bought the curtains and rod from Target about 5 years ago and they really don’t coordinate with how the house has evolved since then. The curtains are gray and a yellow-mustard color. I don’t have any other yellow-mustard in the house, so it seemed kind of off.
They were also a 84″ long, which meant I couldn’t place the curtain rod any higher than right above the window frame. I really like to hang my curtains high and wide so that the room feels taller and larger.
All of the decor on the wall was made by yours truly, except for the clock. You can find the DIY tutorials here: Giant Chalkboard, EAT Sign, Chalk & Eraser Holder. I’ve recently taken down the EAT sign, but don’t know what to put over there now, so we’ll see. It may go back up. The chalk & eraser holder, clock and chalkboard are all staying put!
The only other update I’ve made recently is replacing the light fixture. (And that was 2 years ago! 😂) The one that came with the house was a chrome chandelier with swirly frosted glass light shades. It wasn’t my style at all and I planned to replace it the moment we walked through the house the first time. I chose this 5-light chandelier that is simple and gives off the farmhouse feel that I love. I love it just as much today as the day we installed it!
My remaining DIY projects include painting the base of the table and potentially sanding the chair seats and re-staining them and then painting the backs and legs of the chairs. I stripped and re-stained the table top a couple years ago and never finished the chairs.
I’m considering replacing the chairs altogether because I think they are a little too big for the space, so I’ve been on the hunt. I’ll probably share those options, soon. I chose some new chairs for my design board, but we’ll see if that’s what I get.
Eat-in Kitchen Makeover Design Plans
Here’s the whole plan on “paper”…
1. New Curtain Rod & Curtains: Like I mentioned before, the old curtains and rod didn’t jive with the rest of the house, so we’re replacing those first. And bonus – they were both on sale when I bought them and they are still on sale as I’m writing this! I bought the Riviera Stripe Drapes in Navy and the Faux Wood Curtain Rod. LOVE them! I’ve already hung them up and they are gorgeous! {More to come on a curtain ring “situation.” 😂 Who knew such a small part of hanging curtains would be such a big deal.}
2. Bamboo Shades: I have talked about replacing the old faux wood white blinds in here for what seems like forever!! I’ve been working with a company to have them installed and hopefully they will arrive soon. I love the ones I’ve chosen and can’t wait to reveal them! The one pictured in the above photo is the Driftwood Flatweave Bamboo Roman Shade.
3. Farmhouse Table: This is my dream table right now! I don’t plan on purchasing it anytime soon because we have a perfectly functional table that meets our needs, but it’s on the wish list for sure! I will be giving our current table base and legs a coat of white chalky-type paint. The table top will remain stained. And I’m debating about the chairs …
4. The Chairs: The chairs and table I have currently were a set I found on Craigslist for a steal back when we moved in to the house. (These two-toned ladder back chairs look similar to how I want to paint mine.) I love the farmhouse look and the table is perfect for our space. But I’ve always felt like the chairs were a little too big. I would love to replace 4 of them with some smaller chairs? And my dream would be to add these two wicker woven end chairs to two sides to give it a coastal vibe I love so much.
5. The Paint Color: The walls are already painted Sea Salt (by Sherwin Williams) and I love it, so I’m keeping them the same!
6. Chalk Holder and Clock: I already have these in place and love them, so I’m not changing those either. Yay for some things already finished!
7. Family Sign: I would like to add a family “established in” sign either above the windows or above the chalkboard. I love the one I’ve linked to, because I like the tobacco basket and greenery display behind it. I might try something like that and see how it looks. I love the extra texture and depth that adds!
8. Lighting: I changed out the chandelier that came with the house for this simple 5-light candle-style chandelier a couple years ago with my Christmas money. I love it – and it’s so cheap compared to so many other lights I’ve seen out there!
9. Giant Chalkboard: I made this so long ago and I still love, love, love it! It’s so fun to add seasonal drawings and messages. And in between the staged photos we’re usually using it for 1st grade homework reinforcement. It comes in handy and takes up a lot of space on a large wall. LOVE it!
I’m so excited to see how this makeover turns out. There’s not a ton to do, but I’m sure it will still take me another month or two to finish it. 😋 I just know how long it takes me to finish a project between kids and life. And that’s OK! I’ll be sharing some more updates next week, so stay tuned!

I love the kitchen wall color. Just wondering if it changes tone based on the lighting? Kind of looks blue or grey in some pics, and greenish in others.

Hi Anne, while it does change colors depending on the lighting and time of day, it’s also a hard color to photograph. But then I went back through the post and noticed what might be throwing you off! The picture with the close up of the chandelier is actually the old paint color. LOL The old color was Stratton Blue by Benjamin Moore and the new color is Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams. I hope this helps!! xo, Laura
