Wow! I feel like 2019 has just begun and get we’re already rounding out (nearly) week 3! It’s true what my dad told me when I was a kid – that the older you get the faster time flies. He was so right!
It feels like I’ve hardly taken a breath from the holidays and I’m just now getting a chance to sit down and share my goals for 2019, and a little wrap up for 2018.
My Biggest Change in 2018 was this Eat-In Kitchen Makeover
I’ll be honest. I didn’t accomplish nearly what I had hoped to accomplish in 2018. I’m not sure what it was, but I feel like I focused more on making better balanced choices in 2018 than working. I said “no” to a lot of things and spent time taking care of me, because honestly 2017 was a rough one and I needed some recovery time. And I feel like I accomplished that. So, maybe this year I’ll be able to tackle those home projects I’d love to do.
P.S. I think everyone should make home goals each year, because it will …
- Keep you focused on what you want to do and …
- Remind you of how far you’ve come when you look back and think you’ve done nothing at all.
Home Goals from 2018
You can read the whole post here, but this is the breakdown:
1. The Fireplace: new mantel top, corbels?, change out the trim, change the look of the tile, and whitewash brick if we go with that as a resurfacing option. Score: F | We did nothing with the fireplace. Womp. Womp.
2. The Living Room: new rug, build a coffee table, new sofa, build an end table, new curtains?, and chairs to flank the fireplace. Score: C- | I added a new rug here and you can see the chairs I bought to flank the fireplace in this post.
3. The Kitchen: I’d love to hire a contractor and replace the countertops and get a new sink, but it’s just not in the budget. Instead, though, I did an eat-in kitchen refresh in 2018 and I love how it turned out! Score: B+
- Replace
two light fixtures in the kitchen.(Done in 2016.) Paint the kitchen cabinets white.(Done in November 2015.)Panel the back of the bar.(Done in July 2016.)Paint the walls.(I painted them Sea Salt.)Sand, stain and paint the eat-in-kitchen table.(Done! I kept my x-back chairs and donated the chairs that went with the table instead of standing and staining them. #lazy))Change out blinds for bamboo shades.(Done! You can read all about the bamboo shades here.)- Replace the countertops. (I want quartz! Obviously we’ll have to hire this one out.)
- Replace the kitchen sink. (Hire this out.)
- Replace the kitchen faucet.
- Add backsplash. (I think I’d like to tackle this one as a DIY project. I’ve never tiled anything before, but I’m sure I could, do it!)
- Add height to the cabinets so that they reach the ceiling and add crown moulding around the whole room. (probably next year)
- Replace black appliances with stainless steel. (also probably next year)
4. Guest Bedroom/Office: I didn’t touch this in 2018, so see below for 2019. 🙂 Score: F
5. The Master Bedroom: Also didn’t do this for 2018, so it’s back on the list for 2019 below! Score: F
I’m committing right now to make my home goals more a part of my overall personal goals so that I won’t end up with so many F’s in 2019. 😂
Home Goals for 2019
This year I’ve tried to scale it back a bit, but I’m not sure that I did. Ha! There’s still a lot of stuff on this list and it will probably bleed over into 2020. Most definitely it will. LOL Progress, not perfection, right!?
1. Living Room. I’m definitely going to build that coffee table and end table this year. I bought a table saw on sale at Christmas and will put it to good use this year. I’d love to get a new couch this year, too, but we’ll see if it’s in the budget!
Change out the rug. (I bought this “vintage” distressed rug in 2018.)Buy chairs to flank the fireplace.{As you can see in my summer mantel post. [above]}- Build a coffee table
- Build an end table
- I’d love to replace our couch as well, but I don’t see that happening in 2018.
2. Fireplace. The same as last year!
- Spruce it up with a reclaimed beam mantel
- Add some architectural details
- Do something with the beige tile.
3. Girls’ Bathroom. We only have 2 bathrooms in our home: the master bath and the girls’/guest bath. I painted the cabinets in there and decorated it several years ago, but I never loved the color scheme AT ALL. It’s just not me, but I was trying to use some prints that I got from my great-grandmother. I’d like to make it pink and girly and fun for the girls, so a mini makeover is swirling around in my head!
- Paint the walls
- Change out the art
- Add some cute girly elements!
4. Guest Bedroom & Office. Gracious. This room has felt like the slowest moving process. I finally have my desk that I love and a great office chair, but I’m still lacking some major storage. We also took the bed out of here for my youngest daughter to sleep on since we moved her out of the crib. I’ve always wanted a day bed with a trundle in the guest bedroom. I am trying to work that purchase into the budget this year. Fingers crossed we’ll get it soon!
Build or buy a desk with built-in filing cabinet.(Done in late 2016. It’s from Ballard Designs Outlet and there’s a similar one from Pottery Barn. You can see more of it in this post.)Add curtains to the office.(done!)Paint the office walls.(Done! I painted them Simply White by Benjamin Moore.)Buy a real office chair.(I did that in January 2019! I got this one for a great deal and it’s super comfortable. I love it!)- Replace the full bed with a day bed and trundle in the office/guest room. (I’ve had my eye on this day bed and trundle for forever. I just need to sell the current bed and pull the trigger!)
- Repaint bedside tables or buy new ones.
- Add some bookshelves with cabinets to the room for books and storage.
5. Master Bedroom. It’s time for a refresh in this room as well. I still love our bedding, but I don’t love our furniture, except for our nightstand that I made over almost 7 years ago. I still love them! But it’s time to get a new, real bed, instead of a headboard I made and a metal frame. We’re (almost) in our 40’s and it’s time to have a grown-up bed.
- Change out the art above the bed.
- Purchase a new bed.
- Change out the lamps.
- Paint the currently dark wood furniture. (This will probably take some convincing, but we’ll see. #wishmeluck)
I realize that I took the kitchen off of the goals for this year. But we’re going to have to hire all of that out, which I don’t think will happen this year. So I think I’d better stop there, because I doubt I’ll get even that much done. 😂 But at least I have my plans written down. Now just to prioritize them and make them happen!
I plan to start with that coffee table for the living room! I’m itching to do a DIY project! Stay tuned!
