Wow! Are you in for a treat today. As long as I can remember, my mom has made these homemade cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning. It’s a recipe from my great-grandmother and every holiday we use this roll recipe to make dinner rolls and the base for our homemade cinnamon rolls.

They are truly a family staple. I can’t imagine having Christmas without them, so I make the for my little family now (and share with my in-laws when they come over for brunch). Some affiliate links are used for your convenience.

And the recipe may seem a bit intimidating, but it’s not hard at all. You will need a candy thermometer (a simple one like this), but other than that, you should have everything you need in your pantry!

I’ve set up the recipe two ways today. One is the traditional way that we’ve always cooked it, and the other way uses essential oils and adds a twist to the glaze. It’s delicious either way, but the orange is super yummy!

How to Make Delicious Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

In a saucepan combine the milk, sugar and shortening.

Heat it until the shortening melts, but do not let it boil.

Once heated thoroughly and the shortening has melted, remove from heat, add your candy thermometer (like this one) and let cool to 115 degrees.

In a very large bowl combine 3.5 cups of flour and yeast. Stir and add liquid mixture. It should be the consistency of thick cake batter. Put it in a warm place to let it rise until double in size.

This may take up to 2 hours unless using rapid rise yeast. I just set mine on my daughter’s night stand because the sun was streaming in the window. I closed the door and went and did something else for 2 hours.

See how the dough doubled in size? Once that happens, in a small mixing bowl combine 1 cup flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Add this second mixture to the dough after it’s risen, stirring well. I kneaded the dough until it was all combined.

Turn this dough out onto a well-floured surface and work in extra flour until dough is easy to handle. At this point dough can be refrigerated up to 5 days, which is perfect if you need to be prepared for a large hosting event ahead of time.
