You know that feeling when the house seems like it will close in on you from all of the clutter and chaos? I’ve been living in that state recently. I have been busy with the blog (a bunch of behind the sense business-y kind of things, not cute, fun things) and have just neglected some of the messy things that come with having a 2-year-old in the house.
|Cute, but messy!|
Things like when I was going to bed the other night, I look across the room and wonder why a cup of cheerios is sitting on my desk, or why little tiny shoes seem to be strewn throughout the house in every room. (Note to self: buy the girl less shoes, or at least hide the ones that are too big or little. Otherwise Miss Fashion Statement will try on every pair at least once a day. No lie.) Or why do toys seem to replicate on their own in the middle of the night??
A 2-year-old = the ultimate clutterer. 🙂 Love her, but man it gets messy. And I only have one kid. So go ahead and laugh all you mamas of multiple children. I know I’ve got it easy.
So, what to do when the clutter and chaos threatens to take your very soul? Organize, organize, organize!
|Random tools everywhere.|
One area that has plagued me since we got married is … the tools. You probably can figure that I have a few of them. We have two sets of pre-wedding tools and then post-wedding tools as well, so sometimes more than one of each thing. And they typically are scattered around the house … most likely you can find random tools on the bar in our kitchen. But when I need to measure something, I spend 15 minutes trying to locate the tape measure or a ruler or anything with measuring capabilities. Frustrating!
So, I created a retro solution. You probably grew up with this organizing system in your home as a child. But, I totally didn’t think about this until I saw it recently on Pinterest. Enter wonderful peg board. (There are much prettier peg board organization systems pinned on my Garage Organization board.)
This is all located in our garage, just outside the door to our house. So, I don’t even have to walk out of the house to grab a tool. I just open the door and reach for whatever tool I need. Love, love, love it! I especially love that it can hold my drill, so it’s not sitting on top of the dryer anymore. (Not exactly the laundry room accessory of my dreams.)
Hallelujah. I breathe a sigh of relief now when I need to find a screw driver. I don’t have to look in 4 places to find what I need, just one.
I do have more tools than this, but these are the ones I use most often. The others are neatly tucked away in a tool box. I also bought some small plastic drawers to store my nails, screws and drill bits. I got them from Wal-mart, like these.
And then I organized my coat closet. I guess that’s what you would call it because it’s where we hang out coats. But it holds a lot more. I forgot to take a before picture, but you couldn’t walk in there and there was just tons of stuff all over the floor. It was driving me crazy! Ahhh, much better…
This closet cost me months of irritation, but only took me 20 minutes to hang things up, throw things out and whip it into shape. Why does it take me so long to do things like this?? Probably because I’d rather close the door and work on more fun projects. 🙂
I want to make shelves in this closet at some point. Something like this tutorial from House of Hepworths. (I was so excited to find this tutorial last week … I’ve been looking for one for forever!)
What room or closet do you need to organize in your house. Do you have any tips for organizing?
I’d love to hear them in the comments!
