A few Sunday nights ago we were all recovering from a long weekend. Some of us had been out of town and we were all just tired.
I had no intentions of making anyone dinner and honestly all I wanted was a fruit smoothie. Being the rational pregnant woman that I am (ha!) I had my heart set on a Smoothie King Carribean Way smoothie. I was so set on this for dinner that I was willing to drive the 20 minutes one-way to pick one up.
I became infatuated with these smoothies in college. I was in a Bible study (shout out to the Hess Hall girls!) and we would always meet our Bible study leader at Smoothie King. I always got the Caribbean Way® and it stuck. I’m a stuck in a rut kind of girl when it comes to ordering from restaurants. So, if I like something, chances are I’ll order it every time.
Ok, back to the story … When I went to look up the number to call and find their hours that Sunday night, I was disappointed (major understatement) to find out that they had closed.
What?!?
What does a thwarted pregnant woman do in times of trouble? Why, she turns to Google, of course. Surely there must be a recipe for a similar drink online somewhere. And I hit the jackpot!
Every source I found said that to make a Caribbean Way® smoothie, the secret ingredient is good quality papaya juice. Easy enough, right? Well, I hoped so. Sometimes you can’t find more specialized ingredients at my grocery store.
So, in blind faith, I set out to find my papaya juice. And I was thrilled when I found it at my store. Woohoo! (If you can’t find it in your store, you can order it here.)
I got home and made the smoothie and it tastes just like the original! I *might* have made one every day since then. I know it’s the wrong time of year to be talking about fruit smoothies, but I can’t get enough of the cool beachy taste. Must be the hormones. 🙂
So if you or your kids are every craving a fruit smoothie, no matter what time of year, this one is a winner!
- 1 c. papaya juice (good quality)
- 2 c. strawberries
- 1 banana
- 2 tsp. turbinado sugar (must be turbinado)
- Combine ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Empty contents into a cup and enjoy!
Don’t miss out on the behind-the-scenes fun!

Yum! I never thought to use papaya juice before. I make a very similar smoothie, but I use almond milk and a tangerine or orange (whatever I have on hand) instead of the sugar and juice. Thanks for sharing 🙂
