Essential Oils: My Story {how a non-recycler came to love plant oils}

OK, so you’ve heard about essential oils, right? They are these little bottles of amazingness. And if you have heard about them, then I’m not surprised. I’ve started seeing them everywhere!

Essential Oils: My Story at TheTurquoiseHome.com

And I’m here to tell you that I’m totally in love with them.

And you might think I’ve gone a little wack-a-doodle.

Yep. I get it.

I’ve been hearing about Young Living Essential Oils {EO’s} for years now. Yes, years. And up until recently I, too, thought they might have fallen off the cuckoo wagon. For real. So, I understand, I promise.

But … just a few months ago, I had an experience with them that changed my mind completely! And now, I LOVE them, can’t get enough of them, want to share this amazing gift with the world. These are too good to keep to myself, so I have to share. And you may be rolling your eyes now. But just hear me out. Deal? Deal.

First of all, you may be wondering what IS an essential oil? Is it canola, olive, almond, something like that? Actually no, not like that at all. In a nutshell, essential oils are the aromatic liquids, which are distilled or pressed, of plants. They are used to support emotional, physical and spiritual well-being.

My Story

This is the story of how I came an EO girl.

My mom has been using EOs for maybe 7 years now. So, I’ve been exposed to them though her for a while. But I’m a super huge skeptic and pretty much don’t listen to my mama like I oughta. 🙂 {I think I know everything and tend to be a bit bossy about it. Yep… the oldest child syndrome rears its ugly head.} So, I paid little attention.

Purification Oil and a Stinky Dog

Let’s go back about five years. When my hubby and I got married, he had a smelly older dog that lived inside. I’m super sensitive to smells {and allergic to dogs} and I didn’t always picture my first home as a married woman being filled with the smell of a stinky canine.

So, at my mom’s suggestion, I purchase an EO blend called Purification. I also bought a diffuser, which sends these tiny, minuscule droplets into the air to purify it. It definitely helped my house smell better. {It would have been most helpful to have the dog live in our fenced-in backyard, and then purification would have REALLY worked for good. But the dog continued living in the house and I continued to diffuse my purification oil every day.} 🙂

The Final Straw: Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint

This past Christmas was the final straw that got this skeptic to believe.

I have some pretty terrible crazy reactions when I’m around certain smells.

At Christmas, I was sitting on my parent’s couch and all of a sudden started reacting to something nearby. I got up to splash my face with some cold water when my mom asked me the strangest question. “Would you like to try a lemon, lavender and peppermint bomb.”

A what?!? Huh?

OK, so I {kind of reluctantly} agreed to try it. I figured it couldn’t hurt me to try it and if it didn’t work, I’d just go about my day. She added 2 drops each of peppermint, lavender and lemon oils to about 4 oz. of warm water. I drank a sip, gargled and immediately the brain fog and irritation disappeared.

I mean … Poof! Gone.

My head completely cleared a few minutes later and I was hooked for life. I quickly started doing research to figure out how to get some of these amazing oils.

(You can use this trio in a myriad of ways, not just drinking it in water. You can put the same number of drops in a capsule, fill the rest with a carrier oil and take it. Or you can rub the oils on the bridge of your nose, behind your ears or on the bottoms of your feet. Or if giving it to children, you can add the one drop of each to a teaspoon of local honey. **Always be careful not to get essential oils in the eyes or ears. If you do, then dilute with a carrier oil, never dilute with water!** And be sure to do your own research, not just take my word for it.)

And the Rest is History

I bought my first oils in February 2014 and have used them every day since. When I finally decided to take the plunge, I bought what is called The Premium Starter Kit. It came with 11 different oils and a diffuser! I use that diffuser every day. My favorite combo is Stress Away and Peppermint, a combo we like to call Uplift & Unwind. LOVE it!

I cannot tell you how much I have loved using these oils. From easing everyday muscle soreness with Panaway, to freshening up my laundry with Purification, to adding lemon to my water, to one of my all-time favorite things ever: my new whipped coconut oil and Frankincense facial moisturizer. My skin feels better than it has maybe ever? SOLD!

And here’s the thing, I’m so not a salesy kind of girl. I don’t ever want to sound pushy, but I just HAVE to share. Because, y’all, they work. I want to tell everyone I meet. Every time I’m on Facebook and see another friend talk about how they are dealing with life by using chemicals when a simple essential oils will do, I just want to go over to their house with my oils and oil them up! But that would be weird, so I refrain. 🙂 But it’s so hard when I know it could give them some help.

Can I say too that it’s so weird that I love these? I don’t even recycle, y’all. I’m so not a crunchy, tree-hugger girl. I love to eat foods that are terrible for me and have never cared. But I’m super excited about how my family is feeling emotionally and physically when we use these oils. I love that they are natural and that we’re not using so many chemicals in our home. Weird, I tell you, but worth every penny.

I’m offering a special welcome kit to anyone who purchases a premium starter kit. Click HERE to find out more info on that!

I’ve also started a Sweet Home Oils Facebook group where I’ll be sharing lots of info and testimonials, answering questions and encouraging you on your wellness journey. Send me an e-mail and I’ll add you: TheTurquoiseHome @ gmail . com. (It’s a secret group, so I’ll have to add you via e-mail.)

And I’m definitely not doing away with my regular DIY, crafts and home decor posts here at The Turquoise Home. But I’ll be throwing in a few essential oils posts every now and then.

Whew! Are you still here?? Sorry for being so long-winded. Thanks for reading my story! I hope that if you have any questions at all about essential oils, then you will leave a comment or e-mail me. I’d love to help in any way I can!

  1. Laura I tried your link in regards to using essential oils for eczema but the link doesn’t work. I’m interested as well in getting more information on essential oils but I understand there may be other products needed to combine with the oils such as a carrier. I’m not sure how this works. Are these available through this site as well? How did you identify what oils were your go to ones for your family? I’m very interested in anything that can help with colds or medicinal means.

  2. I am looking into the oils to get rid of the cat smells. However I have perfume allergies and am concerned that the oils would not do well with the allergies.?!?!?!!???

  3. I pinned your pin and my name came up with a comment that I did not make. I haveused oregano but not in the capsule form as stated in the pin. Where did that statement come from?

  4. A friend of mine just sent me a bunch of EO and I have no idea what to do with them. Thanks for this post. Pinned so I can remember your recipes.

  5. Hi Laura! I’ve just recently heard of young living oils, through my daughter. Everyday I receive several text messages telling me how great they are, and she’s just recently started trying them herself. Her hubby gets really bad headaches on a regular basis (I think it’s his high blood pressure). So she applied peppermint oil on him ( not sure where, his head or what) and she said that almost instantly it went away. She has insomnia and uses Peace & Calm, I think that’s what made her a believer. One of the oils helped my grandson when he had the croup. She said next day he was 80% better. She used lavender on her hubby to bring down his blood pressure and she said it also worked but it’s something you have to use 3-4 times a day to really see an improvement. I ordered some things from her but haven’t received them yet. She’s shipping them to me, I can wait to get them. Peace and calm is one of them. I have insomnia too. She said she rubs a little on her feet before bed and it really helps. So I can’t wait to get my order to see if they really work. I also ordered lemon, lavendar, and peppermint. I know my daughter is a believer. I’m going to join your FB group and tell her about it too. Thanks for sharing your experience with the oils.

  6. Laura, this is so timely b/c I just received some EO’s (first time). One thing I am struggling with is I cannot stand the smell of Frankincense 🙁 I am using it for mood elevation so trying to use it several times/day. Do you have any recommendations? Also you mention using it with whipped coconut oil as a facial moisturizer. How do you do that? (I could probably handle it if I used it and then went to bed, lol). maybe it’s an acquired smell??

    1. Hi Cindy – great question! I kind of chuckled when I read your comment, because I have some that I don’t like as well. I don’t think I loved Frankincense at first, but I’ve grown to love it. I REALLY didn’t like Joy or Peace & Calming. But I just forced myself to use them and actually really love Peace & Calming now. I’m still getting used to Joy. 🙂

      I heard someone say that if you strongly dislike an oil smell, then it’s because your body really needs it. {Which makes me laugh since I dislike Joy… ha! But it’s probably true. :)}

For the moisturizer, I whipped about 3/4 cup of coconut oil in my mixer for about 5 minutes. And then I added about 8 drops of Frank and mixed it some more to make sure it was combined well. I didn’t have a recipe from anyone else, I just made it up. I really can’t hardly smell the Frank over the coconut scent, which I love.

Let me know how it goes – if you grow to love Frank or not! 🙂

  7. Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Laura! I have 2 friends who have told me all of the wonders of Essential Oils for a while now and even though I’m usually a pretty easy sell I too have been a skeptic but…that being said I am about ready to take the plunge to the EO side of life! Thanks, again, for sharing such useful info.

    1. You will love them Mary Beth. I was a skeptic for almost 10 years!! So, I get it. But I LOVE them and use them daily. 🙂

    1. Absolutely, Connie! I just posted this for you: http://wp.me/p4utaG-1Q

Let me know if I can help you order some oils! The lavender, lemon, frankincense and thieves all come in the premium starter kit. Otherwise you’ll need to purchase any other oils individually. Send me an e-mail if you have any more questions!

  8. Hi,
I rarely watch Dr. Oz but the other day I tuned his show in and he talked a lot about the Oregano oil. I did not sit to watch all of it, but it was interesting in that he believes in it, as well!

    1. Thanks Diane! I don’t always watch Dr. Oz, but I find his show very interesting when I do. And I can vouch for how awesome oregano is! Totally awesome!

    1. Wanda, thank you so much for sharing this story! I’ve heard so many like it! It’s amazing how these oils are helping families with no where left to turn.
