Painted Picture Frame Gallery Wall

Today I’m giving you a sneak peek at my laundry room makeover. It’s not nearly done, and I’m moving at a snail’s pace, but I just wanted to share one wall because I’m loving it so much! And I think you need a sneak peek.

{So sorry for the terrible photo and lighting quality. There is no natural light in there, so I think I’m going to have to invest in this Neewer Flash for my non-lighted interior photos. Promise they’ll get better.}

My painted photo frame gallery wall was originally inspired by this beautiful thrifted frame wall by Tatertots and Jello. And I love the emerald green she chose, but my colors in the laundry room are orange, turquoise and navy.

I went to my local Goodwill and in one fell swoop I was able to pick up all these different sized frames. I paid $30, which was more than I would probably spend if I went around and really bargain hunted for frames. But, I thought $30, plus the cost of a pot of sample paint isn’t a bad price for filling up a wall with pretty color.

{I took all of the backs off the frames and removed the glass. I am kind of excited about having the glass handy because I want to try my hand at building some of my own frames with pallets and barn wood I have.}

But it took me forever to just get these frames painted.

Do you ever get stuck on a project because you’re not excited about it? I do all the time. I’ll be working, working so hard on a project and then BAM! Stop right in my tracks. I call this DIY Derail. This happens when I do something and don’t like it and then have to figure out how to fix it. Sometimes it takes weeks or even months to find a solution. But what I find is that as soon as I figure out what I love, then I’m right back to it!

For example, these orange picture frames. They just weren’t cutting it. I originally painted them with Rustoleum’s orange spray paint. It was a beautiful color, but when I hung the frames on the wall, it was just too bright. Think University of Florida orange, which is a problem because I am a University of Tennessee grad. Yikes! So, I tried toning them down with a homemade brown “glaze.” Ha! You would laugh so hard. I mixed some brown craft paint with water and tried to “glaze” over glossy spray paint. It was a big fat mess. And I tried to do it on a morning I was supposed to be packing for the lake. Oops! Not my best moment.

So, I “glazed” half of them and then let them sit for a while. I was still debating about whether this was what I really wanted.

And then …. a moment came where the clouds parted and I could sing the angels singing the Hallelujah Chorus.

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hall-le-eh-lu-jah!!

This beautiful picture of a gorgeous coral frame wall. It’s truly a beautiful coral, although Coach calls them pink. 🙂 It is perfect! {The color is “Rejuvenate” by Sherwin Williams.}

Tobi Fairley – I think I need her photographer to come to my house. 🙂

I saw this photo late one night and the morning couldn’t get here fast enough. I rushed over to Sherwin Williams and bought a little sample pot of this beautiful paint. Love, love, love … swoon!

So now I think everything in this laundry room that could be painted, has been painted at least twice. Whew. Major lesson in picking the right paint color first.

Do you love them? I will probably change out the pictures in them periodically. But I’m going for a coastal vibe in my laundry room, so that means fun beach pictures. So for now they have beachy pictures from our various travels. I figured I might as well feel like I’m on vacation when I’m doing laundry. It might make me want to actually do laundry? Nah, probably not, but at least it’ll make it more palatable.

Oh, and I attached the starfish to the wall with hot glue. I don’t plan on taking them down for a very long time, so we’ll see how it holds up. And hopefully it won’t rip too much off the wall when I do want to take them down.

You also may have noticed my board and batten treatment and hooks on the wall. I love it, but it’s not quite finished and I’ll talk more about that when I do my laundry room reveal. I also painted the door to the garage Hale Navy, just like my front door.

What do you think of my painted frame gallery?

Have you ever painted one color and immediately gone back and repainted it? We’ll call it painter’s remorse. 🙂

  1. Would you mind sharing the name of the main paint color you used on your walls in the laundry room? It’s beautiful!

    1. Hi Sarah, I mixed Benjamin Moore’s Wythe Blue with white, so it’s a custom color. But Palladian Blue might be the closest to it!

  2. Nice work. The picture frame colour is my favorite. Sometimes I also diy some decoration with my husband.It’s funny.

  3. What an impressive idea. Can I try this in my own house? I know that’s a lot of work but I am still excited. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Please, I’d love for you to copy me. 🙂 I copied other talented bloggers. Let me know if you do it and post about it!!

  4. Love the colour! I feel your pain. I re-paint things so many times, my husband thinks I’m nuts. I have frames that I must have painted 4 times by now and still can’t decide. Then there are walls in my house…some rooms 3 times in a year and a half. This week I painted my sons room while he was at school. He hated it and I ended up painting it again that day 😛

    1. Wow! That is a lot of painting. Usually if something’s the wrong color, I’ll leave it for a while and come back to it later. I’m usually trying to talk myself into leaving the first color, since I don’t want to have to paint again. Ha!

  5. Love this! I am in the middle of working on a gallery wall for our “formal” living room but it is slow going. It has been way too windy to spray paint and the frames would take entirely too long to paint by hand. Some day…

    1. I’ve tried spray painting outside, but paid no attention to the wind factor. Whew, bad idea! I now spray paint in the garage only. 🙂 Good luck finding the right weather day!!

  6. That is such a great color! I can see why you couldn’t wait for the stores to open!!! I have a boring blank wall in my laundry room and now I may have a project to change that… this could take a while!
    I found you through the “Homemade By You Link Party” on “Made to be a Momma” where I am also partying, would love it if you’d stop by too.
    Hugs, antonella 🙂

    1. Ha! Sometimes I get a wild hair late at night and can’t sleep because I need the stores to open to make my vision come alive! I’d love to see what you do with your laundry room wall! Be sure to come back and let me know when it’s done!! Thanks for stopping by!

  7. Next time we go to Grand Junction, I’ll be getting that paint color. Love it. Your frames look so nice, love how you mixed them up, put things on wall inside them, frame inside a frame. I’ve seen that done before but never attempted it, you’ve inspired me to get busy doing something like it on our bedroom wall. Have one that’s quite empty, been waiting for inspiration to know what I’d like to do. Great post.

    1. Yay for inspiring you! 🙂 I love the frames and the color. I know you will too! Such an easy and cheap way to make a big impact. Good luck with your bedroom wall!

  8. Oh yes!! I love those coral frames! I just got a bunch of open framed painted mint for a gallery wall in my bedroom. Such a fun way to spruce up a blank wall!

  9. After painting my daughter’s new room, I thought it was too blue vs the aqua I was going for. However, as I start decorating it and adding lots of pink and other color, I like it now. I think once its all done, I’ll be fine with it but I did have a few freak out moments. I also wondered about my son’s nursery but again, once it’s decorated it’ll be better. Maybe my lesson is to not pick paint colors while pregnant.

    Love the newer coral color and gallery wall. My laundry room is in our basement and as ugly as can be so there’s no hope for it.

    1. Oh goodness … if I had a dollar for every paint freak-out moment I had, I’d be a rich woman. Even after picking paint colors for so many years, I obviously still get it wrong sometimes. And I bet your basement laundry room has some hope! At least a little? 🙂 Hope you’re having a great week, Megan. Thanks for stopping by!

  10. I love your wall – I also got inspiration from Tattertots & Jello with her gallery wall and I fell in love with it immediately. I love the orange you choose BUT I have to agree with you the coral looks so much better bad light and all ha ha. I’ve used a few different colours as I wanted to add a pop of colour in my entry. I wish I’d spent $30 on frames every thrift store I went to was lacking in frames. I’m pinning this as I’ve got so many walls to cover. Thanks for sharing over at Naptime Creations.

    1. I know … isn’t it the best way to add color to a wall and not spend too much? Too bad your Goodwills aren’t cooperating. Ha! Maybe you’ll find a stash of cheap frames soon! Thanks so much for stopping by, Megan!

  11. I LOVE this – so pretty in coral, and I love the beachy yet perfect for the laundry room aspect with the clothespins! Pinning and sharing on facebook tomorrow:) Have a great week:) I’m looking forward to Wednesday!

  12. I love this! The coral color is perfect 🙂 And I’m falling more and more in love with your board and batten! Especially with the hooks. Can’t wait to see the full reveal!

    1. Aww, thanks so much, Emily! I can’t wait to use all of the hooks this fall when we start wearing jackets. 🙂 I think I need to add a few more.

  13. Happens to me all the time! There are walls I’ve seriously painted three or four times in a few months. But for sure twice in a week. Don’t feel bad – that’s how you reach the perfect look 🙂

    1. Oh my gosh! I’m glad I’m not the only one, but it drives me crazy. I just wish I could pick the right color the first time, but I guess you’re right. It’s how you get the perfect look! And it’s so the way of the DIY’er … lots and lots of do-overs and fails, but lots of beautiful results. :)Hope you’re having a great week!
