How to Name A House: A Fun and Creative Guide

Your home is more than just a place to live; it’s a reflection of your personality, creativity, and style. So, naming your house is like giving it a unique identity, adding charm and character that makes it truly yours.

I realize that this is going to be a silly question to many, but here goes nothing…

“Do you name your home?”

You know, like “Lakeview Cottage” or “The Hydrangea Bungalow” or “Eastlake Manor”?

Naming your home is common in older, historic homes, but until recently I’d never thought about naming our home. I was intrigued when I heard someone talking about naming their new home recently. There’s even a house name generator website that will help you find great names for your home. I filled out the simple questionnaire when we were still living in our old house, but I never settled on anything.

Whether you’ve just moved into a new space, are revamping an old one, or simply feel inspired to give your home a name, this fun and thoughtful process allows you to exercise your creativity and make something as practical as an address feel magical.

Why Name Your Home?

Naming a home isn’t just for sprawling estates or vacation rentals. Giving your house a name is fun, practical, and surprisingly sentimental.

  • A Personal Touch: A home name makes your space feel truly yours, as personal as choosing paint colors or decorating the walls.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Having a name like “The Rosewood Cottage” or “Birch Hill Lodge” adds a sophisticated and welcoming touch. It looks fantastic on custom signs, welcome mats, and stationery!
  • Conversation Starter: Your home’s name can spark curiosity or storytelling when hosting parties or having visitors.

And hey, even if it’s just for fun or a nod to your creative side, who says your home doesn’t deserve a little extra personality?

Inspiration for Naming Your Home

Before settling on a name, it’s helpful to draw inspiration from the elements around you—including the home itself, your personal style, and what resonates with your family. Here are some ideas to kickstart your creativity.

Draw From Nature

Is your home surrounded by lush greenery, flowering gardens, or a view of the lake? Use nature as a muse! Look for features that stand out in your surroundings, like tree species, nearby water sources, or local wildlife.

Example Ideas:

  • Willow Creek Cottage
  • Sunny Ridge Manor
  • Bluebird Haven
  • Pine Cone Hill
  • Pebble Brook

Reflect the Architecture

What makes your home special architecturally? Whether it’s a historic cottage, a modern loft, or a rustic cabin, lean into its design style for a name.

Example Ideas:

  • The Gable House (perfect for a home with a gabled roof!)
  • The Loft on Sixth
  • Tudor’s Nest
  • The Cozy Cottage
  • Fairfax Estate

Consider Sentimental References

If your home holds personal stories, favorite memories, or even nods to your favorite hobbies or places, use those as inspiration. Personal touches make the name even more special.

Example Ideas:

  • Granddad’s Retreat
  • Maple Grove (named after the tree your kids play under)
  • The Vinyl Den (perfect for a music lover’s abode!)
  • Parisian Escape (for lovers of all things French)
  • Liberty Heights (inspired by your favorite childhood novel)

Lean Into Humor or Quirkiness

A name doesn’t have to be all serious and sophisticated. If you’re someone who likes to keep things lighthearted, try something with personality or a bit of a quirk!

Example Ideas:

  • The Shire House (hello, Tolkien fans!)
  • Area 52 (perfect for a space-loving enthusiast)
  • Birdbrain Bungalow
  • The Sandcastle (a fun nod to coastal living)
  • The Waffle House (because breakfast IS the most important meal, right?)

Take Inspiration From History

If you have a historic home or live in a place with cultural heritage, consider names that tell a story from the past. Even if your home is brand-new, you can still give it a dignified name inspired by history or tradition.

Example Ideas:

  • Franklin Manor
  • The Lantern House
  • Windsor Lodge
  • Old Timber Inn
  • Juniper Hall

6 Steps to Name Your Home

Now that you have some inspiration, it’s time to get naming! Follow these six steps to give your home the perfect name that feels personal and meaningful.

Step 1: Look to Your Surroundings

Take a walk outside and observe your property. Are there natural elements, landscapes, or features that stand out? Maybe you have a towering oak tree in the front yard or a babbling brook nearby. Use these unique characteristics as inspiration.

Step 2: Think About Your Home’s Personality

How does your home “feel” to you? Cozy? Modern? Grand? Narrow down a descriptive word or two that captures its core essence. For example, a warm and rustic cabin might evoke “Timber Haven,” while an elegant estate might inspire “Silverwood Manor.”

Step 3: Incorporate Personal Connections

What’s meaningful to you and your family? It could be a favorite place you’ve traveled to, a special memory, or a beloved family member. Personalize the name by weaving these elements into it.

Step 4: Play Around With Words

Combine elements from your surroundings, family history, or design to create the perfect name. Pair a descriptor with a location or feature to make it specific, such as “Sunny Birch Retreat” or “The Marigold Cottage.” Don’t be afraid to brainstorm variations before settling on the final choice.

Step 5: Check for Uniqueness

You’ll want your home’s name to stand out, especially if you’re making signage or documenting it in official ways (like if it’s a rental). Search online to ensure it’s one-of-a-kind.

Step 6: Make It Official

Once you’ve picked the name, start using it everywhere! Create a logo on Canva or with Chat GPT! Add a custom sign to your front porch, etch it on a welcome mat, or use it in your holiday cards. It’s a wonderful way to make it feel real.

Naming My Home

So, recently when I needed to change the name of our wifi network, I decided it was time to name my home. I was trying to think of a name for it when I remembered the little Website for naming homes. And I tried it – and I felt like this house was the perfect home to bestow a name.

After a few minutes, I finally landed on one that seemed perfect. Are you ready??

Drumroll, please …

Elmwood Manor

It took a little bit for it to settle in my heart that this would be the name, but it’s the one! It feels special in that it’s a nod to the elm tree that was planted just behind our driveway by her previous owner 17 years ago. I thought he might cry when he was telling us about his beloved elm tree at closing.

And “wood” because our home backs up to the woods. Easy enough! 😂

And then “manor” because “cottage” didn’t seem to fit. LOL Really, though, a cottage is a small, rural home. And a manor is for something a little more grandiose and stately. The actual definition for manor includes a grand home for a lord on a large plot of land. While we don’t have a large plot of land, it does have the appearance of land because there’s no marker behind our house where our property ends and someone else’s begins.

I just thought that was a fun little home tidbit to share. The studies show that you have a higher view of your home when it has a name, and I think that’s probably true.

Create a Logo for Your New House Name

Use Canva, Chapt GPT or another AI program to create a logo with your new name! Then you’ll be able to create items for your home to make it feel all the more real. You can use elements of the name, like I did. You can add your location or when your home was established. The sky is the limit!

I have Canva Pro, so I set about making a logo for my Elmwood Manor and this is what I came up with!

You can also choose the colors of your home, as if it’s a brand! We all know I love blue and green, so that felt appropriate.

Next up, I want to create a sign with the name for somewhere in our home, like a front door knocker, tea towels or a name plate for the front of the home. Any ideas of what I should create or where I should put it?

Final Thoughts: Make It Personal, Make It You

Naming your home should be a fun and personal process. Whether your style is classic and elegant or quirky and playful, your home’s name is an opportunity to express yourself and make your space feel even more uniquely yours.

And remember, home is where the heart is, but a name? That’s where the stories begin.

I did the generator and it had many nice ideas, but I really like “Squirrels End”, since the squirrels always end up at my house, lol

  2. Your house name is perfect. My best friend is finally building her dream home on the lake and has called it “Mermaid’s Landing” since the beginning. I have named my house “Chateau Honu” since I have a French inspired house on the lake and a turtle (honu) was the first creature we saw when we were sitting on our dock after moving to Tennessee from Hawaii. We also named our cove “Glistening Cove” since the water sparkles in the sunlight.

    1. Hi Patti! That is so cute! I love that your daughter names all of the houses. 🙂 It doesn’t snow very often, but sometimes we get a good snow, maybe every 10 years or so! It’s usually just ice or a dusting of snow. I’m so glad you’re following along! Have a great day! xo, Laura
