Beautiful Farmhouse Sinks + Farmhouse Faucets

Farmhouse sinks are a popular choice in home design. Thanks to their charm and functionality, a beautiful farmhouse kitchen sink (or bathroom sink) will add the perfect rustic touch to your farmhouse decor.

I love a good farmhouse sink. It’s timeless, simple, and gorgeous. It’s also larger than traditional sinks, making it easier to wash large items, rinse produce, or pile up dirty dishes for the time being when you’re in a rush (c’mon, don’t we all do it once in a while?).

The History of the Farmhouse Sink

It may surprise you to learn that while farmhouse sinks (also called apron sinks) are having their moment in the spotlight, they aren’t a new style of sink. In fact, they originated in the 17th century in Great Britain and Ireland as a way to hold water that was fetched from wells (don’t you just love a little history tidbit?).

These days, farmhouse kitchen sinks are coveted for their rustic charm and are so popular with kitchen remodels, that even new builds are starting to add a farmhouse sink option.

Pssst – even though the farmhouse trend might be going out of style, these apron front sinks work with every style and are here for the long haul!

If you’re looking to swap out your kitchen sink, I’m showing you some of the farmhouse sink options I love to show you the huge variety and possibilities within the farmhouse style as consider pieces for your kitchen (or bathroom).

What’s not to love about the timeless beauty that an apron sink adds to a kitchen, like in this example from HGTV?

4 Reasons to Love Farmhouse Sinks

Not quite sure if you want a farmhouse sink? Here are 4 reasons people love farmhouse sinks.

Depth & Size

Traditional sinks replaced farmhouse sinks due to their size, but funny enough, that’s the very reason that apron sinks have exploded in popularity.

They are huge, and their size allows for cleaning large items (think: cookie sheets, and roasting pots) that would be very difficult and awkward to clean in a traditional sink.

Meanwhile, the depth helps prevent water, germs, or other items splashing from the sink around the kitchen like in this example from Joyfully Growing.

Extend Farther than the Counter

As farmhouse sinks come out to cabinet-level or slightly farther, it prevents water from dripping down the front of the cabinets protecting the wood.

Plus, the jutted-out position brings you closer to the sink which helps to prevent improper posture or strain on the back as you wash items.

Note: You can find sinks with a flat front as well as sinks with a slanted front or even a curved front.

And you can always add a drip edge detail, like this stunning beauty from Studio McGee, to keep the water from damaging the floors or cabinets below.

Large Variety of Materials

In the early 20th century, farmhouse sinks in the United States were typically made out of cast iron. Now, you can find farmhouse sinks in a variety of materials such as:

  • Porcelain
  • Copper
  • Concrete
  • Stone
  • stainless steel
  • Fireclay
  • Cast Iron
  • Composite

Each material is enduring and will provide its own look and feel so that you can find just the right one to add that perfect touch to your kitchen design!

For example, going stainless with your sink choice adds more of a modern touch than a classic or rustic touch as this double basin sink shows below.

If you have a kitchen with stainless steel appliances, going stainless might be the way to go.

Variety of Looks and Styles

Thanks to these newer materials, you can now find farmhouse sinks in many sizes, styles, colors, and finishes.

In addition to different sizes, colors, and finishes, you can also find different styles of sink fronts for your apron sink, including:

  • Smooth fronts
  • Square fronts
  • Rounded fronts
  • Rimed fronts
  • Fluted fronts
  • Embossed fronts

Varieties in styles aren’t just limited to the colors or style of the sink front. Other style options for apron sinks include:

  • Single basins
  • Double basins
  • Center drains
  • Right drains
  • Left drains

    1. Hi Caren! I’m not sure about a triple apron farmhouse sink. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one honestly. But I’m sure you could google it and find out! Sorry I’m not more help!

  1. I never thought I wanted farmhouse anything until I spent the weekend with a friend that has a farmhouse kitchen sink. I was there as a guest for her daughter’s wedding. Due to a snafu with the rehearsal dinner, her sister and I spent hours in the kitchen and using that sink was delightful. Big is better!!! We are remodeling our kitchen next year and I am getting one of those! Probably stainless steel but we’ll see.

    1. Yes! I’ve never had one, but used them in many homes and venues. I used to think I always wanted a divided sink. But not any more! I definitely want one whenever we replace the one we have currently! Big IS better!
