A Breezy Summer Refresh: Blue & White Built-In Bookshelves
Refresh your built-in bookshelves for summer with simple blue and white decor. Get easy shelf styling tips and ideas for a light, breezy look you’ll love.

There’s just something about summer that makes me want to lighten everything up — from the throw pillows to the dinner menu (hello, fresh fruit and grilled everything!). And this week, I turned my attention to a favorite little corner of our home: the built-in bookshelves in the living room.
They’ve been quietly collecting winter layers (see them at Christmas) and leftover spring clutter, so it was time for a fresh start. I kept it simple and classic with one of my go-to combos: blue and white. It never goes out of style and always feels crisp and calming for summer.

Here’s how I gave my built-ins a summery update:
1. Cleared the Shelves
First things first — I took everything down. This gives me a clean slate to play with, and I always recommend this step when restyling shelves (or decluttering anything). Plus, it helps me edit what I actually want to keep out for the season.
2. Layered in Blue & White Pieces
I grabbed a few of my favorite ginger jars, some gold, and blue and white picture frames, and even a thrifted bowl or two. These pieces add color without overwhelming the space, and they mix beautifully with my everyday decor.
Tip: Don’t be afraid to stack, lean, or group items. Three smaller objects clustered together can make just as much impact as one large piece!
3. Added Natural Texture
To warm things up and avoid a too-cold look, I layered in a woven lampshade and a woven-style planter. A piece of driftwood and wooden box pieces brought in just the right amount of texture and that casual summer vibe I love.
4. Brought in Life
Even faux greenery makes a big difference! I tucked in a small faux fern, a trailing pothos, and a few other summery plants to give the shelves some movement and color. The boxwood topiaries on the mantel are a year-round staple!
Honestly, this little refresh took less than an hour, but it makes such a big impact. Now, every time I walk through the room, I get that “ahhh” feeling — like slipping into your favorite linen dress or curling up with a good book by an open window.
