The Under the Sink Cabinet Before

With two girls plus myself in the house, it’s a constant battle to keep the beauty products, toiletries and hair essentials under control. And as my girls have gotten older, I’ve realized I needed to add some better storage options to their under-the-sink cabinets.

One day I was in my oldest daughter’s bathroom and had to find something in the under-the-sink cabinet. It was a big mess! And so, I set about to figure out a way to organize it.

Previously we had thrown things into the cabinets without much thought. But I realized we were wasting a lot of space and simply needed more organization.

We could do a lot better with a few simple storage items.

I also wanted to keep some of the most-used everyday items on the counter, nearby, so that it doesn’t take *people* so much time to get ready in the mornings before school. I’ve gathered those ideas to share with you as well.

The biggest goal when buying some new organizational pieces was to use the vertical space better. Let’s talk about why it’s important to organize under the bathroom sink, and then I’ll show you how I did it!

Why Organize Under Your Bathroom Sink?

Maximizing Space

The area under your bathroom sink is often underutilized. By organizing this space, you can make room for essential items and reduce clutter in other parts of your bathroom. When we got the under-the-sink situation under control, the drawers had so much more space, too! Maximizing space means you’ll have everything you need at your fingertips, saving time and reducing stress during your daily routine.

Reducing Clutter

Clutter can make your bathroom feel chaotic and cramped. An organized space creates a sense of calm and order. By decluttering under your sink, you’ll free up space for items you use regularly and eliminate the frustration of searching for misplaced products. We threw away a lot of half-empty boxes and products we no longer needed. Yay!

Keeping Things Clean

An organized under-sink area is easier to clean and maintain. Proper storage solutions can help keep your bathroom products clean, dry, and free from dust or mold. This not only helps you see what you have, so that you can use it, but allows things to stay fresh longer and not get gross in the dark back of a cabinet.

Before You Start: Assess Your Needs

Take Inventory

Before you start organizing, take stock of what you have. Remove everything from under your sink and categorize items into groups by type or size. This will give you a clear idea of what you need to store and what type of storage solutions you need.

I knew that since we had several larger bottles, we would need an open drawer on top of one of the units I used. They would be too tall to fit in a closed drawer.

Measure Your Space

Measure the dimensions of the area under your sink, including the height, width, and depth. Take note of any obstacles such as pipes. This information will help you choose the right storage solutions that fit your space perfectly. I knew the items I chose would fit in the space.

Choosing the Right Storage Solutions

So, I’ll remind you where we started…

And how it looks now!

Organized under-the-stink cabinet with drawers.

Ahhh, much better! I did remove the two humidifiers in the back of the cabinet because we haven’t really used those since my girls were babies. And so now she’s able to see everything she needs and it’s all nice and organized! Let’s dive into some of the items we used.

Stackable Bins and Drawers

Stackable bins and drawers are excellent for maximizing vertical space. They allow you to categorize and separate items, making everything easily accessible. Choose clear bins for visibility or opt for decorative ones to add a touch of style.

I love the acrylic drawers we purchased because they are easy to pull out and you can see what is inside! They come in a pack of two, which can be stacked on top of each other. I used one in each of my girls’ bathrooms. The one below holds my youngest daughter’s collection of lotions, hand sanitizers and body sprays – a girls’ dream. Ha!

Over-the-Door Organizers

Over-the-door organizers can be hung on the inside of your cabinet doors. These are perfect for storing frequently used items such as hair tools. I didn’t buy one of these (yet) because my daughter doesn’t use her hair tools all that often, but we may need it in the future.

Sliding Trays and Shelves

Sliding trays and shelves can be installed inside your cabinet to create additional layers of storage. These are especially useful for items you need to access regularly, because they allow you to pull out and reach products without digging through everything.

Creative DIY Storage Ideas

Repurposed Jars and Containers

Repurposing jars and containers is a budget-friendly way to organize under your sink. Glass jars can hold cotton balls, swabs, and hair ties, while plastic containers can store small cleaning supplies. Label each jar or container to maintain order and aesthetics.

These little container jars aren’t recycled, but they are incredibly inexpensive and look chic on the countertop. They are perfect for keeping cotton rounds, cotton swabs, floss picks and other small items contained. I love that they come with pre-made labels and DIY labels, too.

Tension Rods

Tension rods can be installed horizontally under your sink to hang spray bottles, brushes, and cloths. This keeps items off the floor and makes use of vertical space. It’s a simple yet effective solution that adds functionality without requiring permanent installation. Great idea for renters!

Countertop Bathroom Storage

In addition to organizing the under-the-bathroom-sink storage, it’s important to keep those most used products within reach on the counters. I’ve tried to use pretty trays and vessels before, but I’ve found that a cute rotating organizer on top of the counter is my favorite solution.

Rotating Makeup Organizer

My girls and I always want to have our most-used items n reach. I’ve been using a rotating organizer like the one below for 7+ months, and I LOVE it! Everything I need stays right where I need it making my morning and nighttime routines quick and seamless! So, I grabbed these pretty lazy Susans for my girls’ bathrooms. They love them!

Hair Tools Organizer

If you use your hair tools every day like I do, this on-the-counter organizer for hair tools is a godsend. I keep my hair dryer plugged in for quick use and the other tools are easily accessed. I love that they are stored in metal cups so they can be stored and cool down while they are in the organizer.

Maintaining Your Organized Space

Regularly Declutter

Make it a habit to regularly declutter the under the bathroom sink storage area. I would set aside time every 6 months or so to go through your items, discard any expired products and remove or donate anything you no longer use. This will help keep your space tidy and uncluttered!

Label Everything

Labeling bins, drawers, and containers makes it easy for everyone in the household to find and return items to their designated spots. Use labels to create a visual reminder of where things go to help belong, promoting consistency and order.

Final Thoughts

Organizing under your bathroom sink might seem like a small task, but it can have a significant impact on your daily routine and overall bathroom aesthetic.

I hope these tops and ideas help you to transform your chaotic bathroom space into a streamlined and functional area.
