Traditional Bedroom Design Plan {Take 2}
A cozy and traditional primary bedroom design is the perfect place to relax and hang out after a long day. Lots of great ideas for creating a primary bedroom retreat and adjoining sitting area.

It’s been such a long time since I just wrote an update post. And it feels good to just spill the beans about decorating plans in my home. I feel like I’ve lost the art of coming on here and sharing my home with you all and I want to get back to that!

Walk Down Memory Lane
If you’ll indulge me a little backstory, I’d love to share it. (I feel quite rusty, so bear with me, please.)
I’ve been writing about my life and home online for more than a decade. Can you believe it?? I started sharing my treasures and home decorating journey with the world 13 years (!!) ago this week. And when I started, I had a toddler and was trying to figure out how to be a stay-at-home mom. I just got on here almost every day and wrote about my daily decorating adventures. I loved it!!
After a while, I started to make a few pennies at this gig, and over time it grew into a full-fledged business with more than just me working for this little blog. And over time I was told by experts that I should stop writing so many personal stories and updates and focus on SEO for the sake of the business.
So, I started being more intentional about my blog posts. They needed to have certain keywords and a focus that would continue to bring in income after I hit publish. It was a good strategy for a while, but over time it’s felt so cold and not what I originally set out to do with this space. I’d felt like I’d lost my first love for home decor blogging.
Maybe I’m going through puberty or something. Ha! I AM 13-years-old now. So, please forgive the awkwardness. 🙂
I wrapped up my 3-room makeover project last year with the laundry room, dining room and butler’s pantry, that had spanned two years, and I realized I didn’t have any more home projects lined up. And honestly, we were financially focused on other goals, so making over my home wasn’t a top priority. (Although it should always be, because it’s truly what makes this business run.)

So, that brings us up to now. I’ve been dipping my toes back into making over some more spaces in my house with my daughter’s bedroom. And I’ve been pinning and saving ideas for my primary bedroom for years. I think once my daughter’s bedroom is finished, I’ll tackle it next!
I went ahead and started ordering some preliminary things for my bedroom makeover, because I couldn’t help myself.
We’ve lived in our house for 5 years now and I originally picked a paint color quickly to just get the pistachio green paint off the walls. I picked a tried and true favorite: Revere Pewter.
It’s a beautiful green beige/greige color and it’s been a great choice for the room. But since living there for 5 years, we’ve come to realize how bright the room is with 7 windows. And a bedroom is a room that you want to feel cozy. So, I’ve been brainstorming what new color I would like on the walls.
Eventually, down the road, we’d like to gut the primary bathroom. But in the meantime, I want to actually fully decorate our bedroom. We’ve still only hung 1 piece of art on the walls (over the bed). And it’s time to make it feel homey, cozy and beautiful!
Thanks for letting me vent and share about how we’ve come to this point. I should probably do a house update since we’ve been in the house for 5 years now!
The Bedroom Progress So Far
Let’s take a look at what we’ve done already in the bedroom. You can read all about my original bedroom design plans when we moved in HERE. I typed them up less than a year after we moved in. And you can see how the bedroom started:

When we moved, we had a DIY headboard and DIY-upgraded IKEA nightstands. They were super farmhouse style, so I replaced them with a new bed frame and new nightstands.
All of the other bedroom furniture came with my husband when we got married. And we brought the rug with us from the old house. This is how it looks today…

I have two pieces of art I switch out over the bed depending on the season. The coastal art for summer (above) and the pine art for Christmas and winter (below).
And we bought the Frame TV for our bedroom across from the bed. But that’s really as far we we’ve gotten. I don’t even actually have lamps for this room because I have been saving up to buy the ones I really want. (The lamps in the pictures are borrowed from my teen daughter’s room. And we use random lamps in here normally.)
The NEW Bedroom Design Plan
And while the current view of the room is good and I love everything about it, I want to do more!
I want to hang pictures on the walls and really focus on making this a warm and cozy space for us. The original plans were for a coastal, restful retreat. But seeing all of the natural light, we can totally go for a darker color on the walls!
I want to change the color from a neutral greige do a rich brown color. I know brown walls are trending (and can be controversial), but hear me out.
I like to stick with a whole house color scheme when I’m decorating. I’m pretty limited in my color scheme to a dark green, dark blue or dark beige/brown. I cannot imagine adding any other color to the mix in our color scheme. We have navy in the living room, and between the living room and bedroom is the powder room, which has dark green walls. So, that leaves a dark beige, brown or taupe color.
See how it looks when I lay it out:

My husband reminded me that I’ve loved the color brown for a long time, because our bridesmaids dresses in our wedding were brown! How did I forget?!? Ha! They had brown dresses with blue sashes. So, it seems fitting that we would end up with a blue and brown bedroom, right?
And I know the ivory curtains and brass picture frames will really pop off the darker walls. Here’s my vision:
I’ll be sharing more later about the paint color exactly, but I’ve gotten a lot of samples and have narrowed it down to two colors. And it will probably be either Davenport Tan (Benjamin Moore) or Mouse’s Back (Farrow & Ball).

A lot of the things in this updated bedroom makeover simply come down to saving money in our budget for the items that I want. I’ll possibly be DIYing some things, but for the most part we just need to buy the items and add them to the room. I’ve shared before how I budget for home projects and this time is no different.
The Sitting Room Plans
I’ll just say this from the jump that I LOVE having a sitting room in our bedroom. It’s a great secondary living space that we use pretty often for taking phone calls or hiding away from the main living room. We also use the sofa to hold our clean laundry, so that’s fun, too! 😉
It started out like this lovely blank space.

And now it looks like this…

It honestly won’t change too much, because I love the sofa and the rug. We got the sofa for $200 from a neighbor who was selling it at her yard sale. Perfect condition! There’s not much wall space, so that won’t look too different. But I would like to change out the chair for something else, add some new throw pillows and maybe add a small coffee table. We’ll see!
Final Thoughts
I’m excited to finally be able to give this room some much-deserved attention after 5 years in this house! I really thought we would focus on this room first, but it’s been fine to add things a little bit at a time and take it slow.
What are your thoughts on the new potential wall color? Yay or nay to brown walls?

I love your ideas for brown walls. And your vision board.
We had brown walls in our previous home (navy in this home). I think the color was called “Mushroom” but not positive. We loved it, so cozy feeling!
I look forward to seeing the completed room!
Ohhh, that sounds lovely! The color “mushroom” us kind of what I’m going for! 🙂 I look forward to painting it and feeling oh so cozy in our bedroom. More to follow! 🙂 xo, Laura
I love what you are planning on doing and I wish I had a sunny room. I like Davenport Tan as it looks like a richer warmer colour.
I am new to your blog and am doing your declutter challenge. Have you ever done a blog on decorating a small dark bedrooms? Even on a sunny day the rooms are dark. I am using your idea of a whole home colour plan. Current colours I am using are all BM; walls Wheat Sheaf (kitchen (in progress), tv room, living room, hallway) accent wall tv room & pantry door October Mist, kitchen island Somerville Red, trim Cloud White (kitchen cabinets will be Cloud White). This leaves two very dark bedrooms & a bright bathroom (2 skylights)
to paint. Also I am refinishing the tops of two end tables & kitchen table Essex Green. I would love suggestions on colours or any input.
Hi Cindy! Welcome!! So glad you’re here! Sounds like you’re doing the right things and making a plan. I think with smaller, dark bedrooms I would go lighter with the paint. They could be any color, just on the lighter end of the spectrum. I wouldn’t necessarily do a white or off-white, but if that’s what you like, then that would be good! Both of my daughter’s bedrooms are pretty dark with one small window in each one, so I did a light pink in one and a light blue-green in the other. It works for me! 🙂 xo, Laura
