The “Go Big or Go Home” Rule of Decorating
Over the years of decorating my own space, making many mistakes, and learning from them, I have learned the rule of “go big or go home.”
I used to walk into a store and buy all of the small little tchotchkes because they were cheap. I could get a little boost of happy and add it to my decor stash. Yay!
But, what did that mean for my home? It meant that I had a mantel full of small knick-knacks. Or a wall with tiny little frames on the wall. Let me show you an example:
Oh my! The scale is so off. Instead of investing in a large piece of art, I chose small frames all spread out because they were inexpensive.
Thankfully, I eventually realized the frames were not the right thing for this large wall above the bed. I made a large headboard and added a big piece of art above the bed for a better filler of the space!
Since those early days of decorating my home, I’ve learned a lesson or two about proportion and scale. And, yes, size does matter.
Having a large statement piece will make the most impact and look the best when decorating your home. That’s the rule of “Go big or go home!” Simple, right?
I will also say that large wall decor doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, it can be super inexpensive, like my large abstract art that I made myself. Check it out here. So, check out these amazing ideas from some amazing women and get to decorating!!
Large DIY Wall Decor Ideas
I found several ideas for you from my blog and others’ blog so that you can be inspired to create some beautiful wall decor ideas DIY style in your home!
1. Large Gallery Wall with Family Photos or Memorabilia
The most popular way to decorate a large wall is to create a gallery wall. I have done several gallery walls in my home and am currently working on another!
Gallery Wall from The Lettered Cottage
You can gather any and every frame in your home, as well as pick them up for cheap at thrift stores, for your an eclectic look. Just remember to have enough frames or other wall décor to fill the space and make a big impact together.
Or you can buy all of the same size frame and create a more streamlined gallery wall.
2. Canvas Wall Art
A blank canvas and scrap wood is not only easy to find, but cheap, too! And a little creativity can go a long way in making an accent piece for your walls.
I created the above DIY canvas wall art with a photo, a canvas, Mod Podge, wood from my scrap pile and paint! It’s a beautiful reminder that it doesn’t have to be costly to have beautiful home decor.
3. DIY Engineer Prints for Large Living Room Wall
Did you know you can blow up printable art at places like Staples and Office Depot for super cheap and create beautiful, large scale wall art? It’s the perfect solution for any blank space!
I took two prints of a photo I bought and downloaded and wrapped them around foam board for this beach scene wall decor. It’s such a great, inexpensive way to make an impact!
Last spring, I printed one of my spring free printable for my mantel decor and framed it with a huge frame from Hobby Lobby.
4. DIY Farmhouse Wood Shelves for an Accent Wall
Add floating shelves in any wall in your home for an immediate upgrade!
When I wanted to fill this wall space in my kitchen, I grabbed two boards from the hardware store and some shelf brackets to make these easy, DIY shelves for less than $40!
5. Use a Large Mirror to Fill a Wall
A mirror will not only fill a large wall, but it will reflect light and make the room appear larger!
In my dining room, I added this gorgeous French-inspired brass mirror that reflects the light around the space. The large lamps on either side help to fill the space, as well!
6. Add an Oversized Chalkboard to Make a Large Wall Useful
Making your own chalkboard with a DIY frame is an excellent way to fill empty walls in a common area. It can be changed out for different seasons or used to communicate important information for the family.
Kids love to have a place to write on the chalk board, too!
7. Hang Charcuterie Boards on the Wall
Make a utilitarian serving board gallery wall with pizza paddles or charcuterie boards. This decor idea knocks out a storage solution and practical kitchen decor in one fell swoop! Use different sizes and shapes for a more interesting focal wall.
I love being able to reach up and grab a board off the wall when I’m ready to serve a charcuterie board-style lunch, dinner or snack!
8. Paint a Plaid Wall Treatment for Big Wall Decor
This painted plaid wall idea is a great way to add interest to an entire wall without adding a bunch of decor. The wall is still able to be utilized for whatever means needed, but it’s beautifully decorated!
The wall behind my desk is the only wall most people see when they come to my home. So, I decided to spice it up with this plaid wall treatment. It’s such a cute backdrop for my large wall calendar, pin board and printer stand.
9. Wall Trim Molding or Board and Batten
Adding DIY Picture Frame Moulding is a great way to fill up a large empty wall space on a budget with just a few simple tools. You can even do this without a power saw, if you want to use miter shears!
Bring it two-thirds of the way up the wall and paint it the same colors as your trim for the biggest impact.
Adding board and batten is another wall treatment idea that adds a ton of architectural interest to your space.
10. Create a Beautiful & Functional Command Center
Use beautiful, functional pieces to make a large wall space work in your favor! I transformed this wall space in my kitchen to a family command center with hooks and cubbies for storing our stuff. Not everything has to be decorative, only!
I did the same thing in a long hallway in our old house, where we entered from the garage. Using pretty utilitarian pieces can make it so pretty!
11. Oversized Wall Art with DIY Wooden Signs
I’m a huge fan of taking a cheap piece of plywood or other wood material and turning it into large pieces of art!
I used a piece of plywood and some faux shiplap pieces to create this reversible Christmas sign for my living room mantel above my fireplace. On one side is this “Farm Fresh Christmas Trees” stenciled sign.
And on the other sign I stenciled the words to “O Holy Night,” which I will leave up through January. (Learn more about how to stencil wooden signs here.)
12. Wallpaper Large Walls or Accent Walls
A subtle or statement wallpaper can add beautiful decor to a space and give a whole new level of added interest. Choose paste-on-the-wall wallpaper, pre-pasted wallpaper or peel & stick for your room.

I noticed your Laundry sign and Pantry sign. Love them? Can you share where you got them? Thank you.
Hi Suzanne, these were both from the Hearth and Hand line at Target a few years back. They don’t sell them anymore, but if you search for them on a second hand store like Mercari or Poshmark, I bet you could find them! Or look for similar signs at Kirklands or Hobby Lobby. Hope this helps! – Laura

Hi Laura,
I have zero wall space, but I can always add “wallpaper.” I loved this post! Some really fun ideas. Thanks! Merry Christmas!
Thanks for this amazing information
Nice! Why do they make houses with so few walls now?!?! I need more wall space! 😁
I do love the open feel you get but the downside in the lack of walls is the place to hang/display things you love. You can float a sofa with a table behind it – but it is difficult to float a picture.
Ooh . To float a picture you could hang from ceiling with fishing line, ribbon, or a pretty chain. I would say directly above the table you floated behind the sofa,as mentioned above. The truck would be to have the picture be double sided like your Christmas sign. Enjoyable from both sides.😊
Love all the ideas. Thanks for sharing at the Inspiration Spotlight party. shared.
